092 Surah Al Layl

Surah al-Layl - Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan



بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ


1. وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ


“Allah swears By the night, as it covers up”

2. وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

“By the day as it is brilliant”

3. وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَىٰ

“How remarkably the creation of the male and the female”
“What could have created such a remarkable creation of the male and female”
-- > And I swear by the one, how awesome is the one, what kind of lord is this, what kind of entity is this that could create the male and female
-- > How incredibly powerful, awe inspiring the creation of the male and female
-- > any creature (animals, human beings, plants, etc etc)
-- > one necessities the existence of another

4. إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ

“No doubt, your efforts are all over the place/ diverse/ contradictory”
سَعْيَكُمْ : sai: pace really fast; faster than walking and slower than running; walking quickly
لَشَتَّىٰ : shatta : originally together and then it was broken apart

5.  فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ

“ Then as for the one who gave and protected himself/ god conscious”
أَعْطَىٰ : give a lot, give something in response to something, gave as a favour/ in bonus
وَاتَّقَىٰ : Taqwa: save yourself from evil/harm and the consequences of evil/ harm.
                          take action based on fear

6.  وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

“And he confirmed the truth in the ultimate good”
بِالْحُسْنَىٰ : best possible
وَصَدَّقَ : Tasdeeq : say its good/ confirm the truth in it and then to act upon it also

7. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

“Then, soon we weill make ease for him the easiest”
We will make the easiest thing easy upon him
-- > I will make him the easiest really easy for him
-- > He finds doing good things easy.
-- >  All the arrangements for you to perform well and to do the things that will elevate your status with Allah will be made easy for you. All the doors will be open

8. وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ

“And as for the one who is cheap and be free of need”
-- > he became cheap in giving others and kept wealth for himself ;
وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ : Istiqna: he feels reckless; to feel not in need of anyone.

9. وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

“ and lying against the ultimate good”

10. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ


“Then soon we will make the hardest thing easy for him”
-- > we will make the path to hellfire/ evil deeds easy for him

11. وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ

“ And what good is his wealth; his wealth is not gonna make him free of need when he falls in the ditch”
-- > His wealth is not gonna be able to help him
تَرَدَّىٰ : Taradda: to fall yourself off a cliff; to fall yourself in a ditch
ditch of evil deeds, ditch of the grave, ditch of hell fire

12. إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ

“It is only upon us, truly to give guidance”
-- > real guidance is only that which leads you to us
-- > it is only upon Allah to guide

13. وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْآخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ

“And it is only we ourselves own the hereafter and the earliest”
-- > real ownership truly only belongs to Allah

14. فَأَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ

“Then, Thus, I have warned you the fire that keeps sparkling, blazing, popping and crackling”
فَأَنْذَرْتُكُمْ : Inzaar: sit somebody down, make them aware of the entire situation, make them realize the way their going and if they continue going, there is a great danger ahead of them and to scare them; thoroughly inform and warn

15. لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى

“No one will throw themselves, except the most wretched”
-- > No one will be thrown into this blazing, crackling fire except Al-Ashqa.
يَصْلَاهَا : Yasla: cast himself

16. الَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

“The one who lied against the truth and turned away”
-- > turned away from revelation, from the one who asked him

17. وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى

“And the most fearful the one who has the most Taqwa, will be warded away; he will be taken far far far away from the harmful”
-- > Most of the mufassiroon say that these ayat apply to Abu Bakr Siddiqur.r

18. الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

“The one who gave his money so that he may be cleansed”
-- > In hopes that Allah will cleanse him
-- > Teach your children to give, give off the things they like

19. وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِنْدَهُ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰ

“ And there was not a single person that had a blessing/ gift for him that should be paid back”
"How can there ever be anyone who is going to pay him back for what he gave. "

20 . إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَىٰ

“Except in persuit of the face (pleasure/contentment/ satisfaction) of this most High/ Supreme Lord:

21. وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ

“The one who acquired the properties/ attributes/ characteristics (that have been described in this Surah) this person will truly very soon be very content.”
-- > Know that remembering Allah, the hearts attain satisfaction.
