بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ


Tafseer of Surah 88 - Ghashiyah - Nouman Ali Khan

Previous Surah: people headed for hell fire, people headed to paradise
Ayah 16: (address to the kuffar directly) "You give preference to worldly life"


1. هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ

(address is to the messenger.s- show of anger by Allah in response to lack of reaction)
“Did the news of overwhelming covering event come to you? ”

yaghsha/ ghashiyah / ghishawatun :  الْغَاشِيَةِ : To cover something up entirely/ It is an adjective of Al Qiyamah. That which covers, overwhelming overshadowing calamity, DOJ

Ata أَتَاكَ : to come/ arrive ( easier in comparision- light word)
jaa’a : come ( enormous, heavy, powerful, implies effort)

hadith: حَدِيثُ : something that occurs/ happens, something that is new
The word حَدِيثُ is being used here as though it is a new event.

2. وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ

“ Especially on that day, It is only on that day
that some faces who will be many in number are going to experience
there is going to be an expression on them – Qashi'ah”
wujooh وُجُوهٌ : some faces, many faces
Qashiyah with ‘ya’ is to be afraid of something bigger than yourself.
Qushoo’ with ‘ain’ is to be so afraid that your muscles become numb, the fear starts paralyzing you, state of a believer in salah, a step above Qashiyah with ‘ya’

“ The faces on that day will be overwhelmed with fear so much so that there will be a numbness on them”
= > the believer’s heart experiences qushoo’ with ‘ain’
= > Allah does not grant that honor to disbeliever. Extreme amount of humility.

3. عَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ

“(These faces) that have been put to work/ exhausting activity/ false worship”
= > gave preference to worldly life
= > their faces are exhausted
amilah/amal عَامِلَةٌ these faces have been put to work,
Nasibah : نَاصِبَةٌ : to be pegged inside the ground/ prominent/ wobbly
= > so tired you cannot even stand straight/ completely overrun by work

4. تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً

“ They will be throwing themselves (faces will cast themselves) in fire that is hamiyah حَامِيَةً “
= > he will be completely overrun by fire- worst kind of humiliation
hamiyah : حَامِيَةً : adjective to fire:
Hama/ Himayah : to prevent something, to keep you from getting something
Naran hamiyah: نَارًا حَامِيَةً : some kind of a protected fire, scorching flame of desert sun
= > it prevents the skin from getting burnt off, it prevents you from getting any rest
= > Allahumma la taj’alna min ashabin naar

5. تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ

“ (These faces) will be given to drink from a spring that is gushing out boiling water”
siqaya: تُسْقَىٰ : to give somebody to drink in their mouth (usually for animals)
ain : عَيْنٍ : spring/ eye / anything beautiful to look at
Aniyah / ana/ آنِيَةٍ : now/ of the time to have come/ spring that comes out
when you boil water or any liquid and the time has come when its reached the final boiling point where its actually bubbling up
= > spring is gushing out water but it only starts gushing when it is reaching the most intense part of the heat
= > their faces are being made to consume
= > their faces will  be covered by fire
and now they are covered in boiling water
= > ain عَيْنٍ is a spring inside the hell fire whose only purpose is to gush out boiling water

6. لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ
“ they have no food for them, except from this ضَرِيعٍ dharee- thorny food”
laisa  لَيْسَ : usually occurs for present tense, immediate situation- illustrates the anger of Allah as though they are already there.
lahum لَهُمْ : at the beginning = > it is for those especially that there will be no food at all
dharee ضَرِيعٍ : raw sea weed, thorny kind of plant, poisonous and thorny and itchy
= > they will actually go around looking for that food

7. لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِنْ جُوعٍ
“ It doesn’t add to your fat/ its not nutritious
and it will not make them free of need from hunger”
= > they will keep eating and keep eating and keep eating
= > May Allah save us from the humiliation of hell fire

8. وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاعِمَةٌ

“It is on that day that they (some who are many in number) will be in ni’ma “
naimah / ni’mah نَاعِمَةٌ : softness, ease, relaxation, all sorts of relaxation, happiness, freshness,
= > they have to give their lives in toil now
= > face you have when you are given a gift, joy on your face

9. لِسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ

“ it is only for the efforts of these people
those faces/ those people were engaged in some kind of effort that they are content”
= > sa'i : fast kind of a pace work,
 = > efforts of salah, tazkiyah, to remember Allah, to stay away from haram, ...
= > ridha : رَاضِيَةٌ : satisfied with something you get, to be content
= > they are pleased with their Lord because He honored them with doing things that please Him in this duniya.

10. فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ

“in gardens that are high”
= > room on top floor hotel room
= > garden on top of a hill
= > Jannah is lush gardens

11. لَا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً

“ You ( the messenger of Allah.s ) will not hear in it any useless talk/ nonsense”
lagiyah/ laghu:  لَاغِيَةً : elude, shameless, thoughtless speech, absurd, obnoxious, bad talk, evil speech

12. فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ

“ In those gardens are water springs flowing”
= > you are on top of waterfall
ain عَيْنٌ : water springs
jariyah جَارِيَةٌ : flowing

13. فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَرْفُوعَةٌ

“high lofty couches that has been elevated”
sareer سُرُرٌ : a bed/ a couch that you recline on – only rich people have it
= > Jannah, Allah is offering stability- high lofty couches
marfu’ah مَرْفُوعَةٌ : that which has been elevated – adjective; somebody has made it
= > he can sit there and see anything he owns

14. وَأَكْوَابٌ مَوْضُوعَةٌ

“ Glasses have already been placed / lowered "
koob/ akwab وَأَكْوَابٌ : cup that doesn’t have handles, kinda like champagne glasses
maudhu’ah : مَوْضُوعَةٌ : lowered, it has been put down for you (constantly be placed for you)

15. وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ

“these cushions, rows and rows and rows of pillows,
 tons and tons and tons of pillows”
namariq :     نَمَارِق : small pillows, small cushions

16. وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ

“ exotic rugs spread over”
zarabiyah : زَرَابِيُّ : expensive elegant, rugs
mabthutah : مَبْثُوثَةٌ : spread over

17. أَفَلَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

“Haven’t they then looked already
Aren’t they looking carefully enough
at the camel / towards the camel
how it was created” ?
ibil : الْإِبِلِ : camel
= > just ponder on the camel itself
= > incredible creature-  of the domestic animals, camel is the biggest
= > ( camel, this massive creature is humble before its master ) Allah shows you what slavery and loyalty means by means of that camel

18. وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ

“ and towards the sky ( doesn’t he look towards the sky)
how it was elevated above him?”

19. وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ

“And (Didn’t they) look towards the mountain how they were pegged into the ground”
nusibah: نُصِبَتْ to be pegged/ outward and apparent

20. وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ

“And (didn’t they) look towards the earth, how it has been flattened and made vast” ?
sataha: سُطِحَتْ : to spread something out and to smoother it

21. فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ

“ Then remind
you are nothing more than a deliver of a reminder”
= >  dont worry what effect it will happen on people, just remind!

22. لَسْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُصَيْطِرٍ

“ you are not at all over them
you have not been placed over them as a musitir”
musaitir :  مُصَيْطِرٍ :  someone placed diligently in charge over someone, monitor everything he does and control everything he does, and to record all of his activity
= > you cant force him
= > the reminder in itself is enough
= > there is no compulsion in deen – la ikraha fid deen

23. إِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ

“As for those who turned away and disbelieved is concerned,”

24. فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ

“Then as a result,  Allah will torture him greatest punishment.”
a’zaab : الْعَذَابَ : a’zabar rajulu is when a person leaves eating because of severe dehydration – they are dying of dehydration, from it we get we get a'zab

25. إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ

“It is no doubt, only to Us that the final return will happen”
iyaab: إِيَابَهُمْ : final final return
= > they are not going anywhere else

26. ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ

“Thereafter, then
there is no doubt that
their accounting/ complete audit has been taken upon us, mandated upon us”
