Surah Al-Humaza

Tafseer of Surah 104 - Humazah - Nouman Ali Khan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1.  وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ

“(All kinds of) Destruction, curse are the (each and every one of the) people speaking ill on their face or behind their back”
-- > Allah.awj is extremely disappointed
 هُمَزَةٍ : someone who says bad things behind their back; when one person speaks to another in a way that they are attempting to break them psychologically, break their dignitiy, fracture their sense of self-worth; person who does gheeba; to poke someone with a sharp object;
  لُّمَزَةٍ : someone who insults them in their face; sarcastic tone; sarcasm against someone else; find constantly flaws in them; the one who points the flaws in others over and over again; stay on someones case constantly until you find something to be criticized,
-- > هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ الْحُطَمَةِ : something that happens a lot; far extreme of an attribute, engulfed completely in that attribute;
وَيْلٌ : used to describe someone who is engaged in something ugly and hideous; curse against them; Infact destruction is upon this people; may destruction be upon these people; famous valley (lowest pit) in Jahannam is also called وَيْلٌ
-- > descriptions of هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ : anyone who is condescending, arrogant, insensitive, critical, back biting, self indulged, harsh, disrespectful, inconsiderate, vulgar, irreverent, conceded in one’s speech, or in one’s attitude or in one’s body language

2. الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ

"The one who gathered wealth and counted it”
وَيْلٌ to the one who spent his entire life gathering wealth from here and there and counted it and making plans
عَدَّدَهُ: to prepare something, to get something ready, to prepare for future catastrophes, count properly, there is a lot to count, he does it over and over again

3. يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ

“He assumes that his wealth will give him eternal life, immorality”
أَخْلَدَهُ  : that will continue to sustain him endlessly

4. كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنْبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ

“NO. Not at all. Rather, for sure, there is no doubt about it whatsoever, (Allah swears) he will definitely be thrown in Al-Hutamah, this despicable place”
 الْحُطَمَة : to break (fire that crushes the bones until it reaches the heart); to break, bend, to twist out of shape, crushed and crumpled
يُنْبَذَنَّ : nabaza: to throw something that has no value whatsoever
فِي : this is a place is that is very very deep

5. وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ

“What will give you any idea what this Hotamah is?”
Have you realized what would give the slightest clue, you will never know what Hutamah is

6. نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ

“The fire of Allah, that has been lit (by Allah.awj) “
this is the fire especially designed by Allah, in comparable
الْمُوقَدَةُ : that which is lit, the fire that will never ever go down, remains lit, endless fire
-- > illustrates the sparks of a fire

7. الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ

“The one that rises up against, makes its way to the hearts”
تَطَّلِعُ : ittala’a : climbing a mountain, painful
الْأَفْئِدَةِ : piece of flesh that is surrounded by fire; innermost heart

8. إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِمْ مُؤْصَدَةٌ

“It is especially upon them,  the Musadah”
this is a special punishment for these people
مُؤْصَدَةٌ : wall where animals are locked to secure; to put something upside down; none of the heat escapes; 

9. فِي عَمَدٍ مُمَدَّدَةٍ

“in outstretched columns”
مُمَدَّدَةٍ : to stretch to far extremes
عَمَدٍ : any column that is made of wood or iron, essence of the construction
-- > extremely long, in extreme heat
