Surah At Takwir
Tafseer of Surah 87 - A'laa - Nouman Ali Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Surah Al-A'la
One of the favorite surahs of Muhammad.sMusabbihaat Surah – begins with declaring perfection of Allah
(surah hadith, surah hashr, surah saf,
surah jumuah, surah taghabun,
surah israa, surah a'laa )
Of the Musabbihaat, this is the one that is most beloved to the messenger of Allah.s
1.
سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى
Messenger.s
has been commanded to “declare the perfection and maintain the perfection of
the name of your Lord, most High”
= > Sahabah would say 'subhana rabbi al-a'laa' whenever they heard/read this ayah (narrated by Ali.r)
= > origin from which that zikar in sujood comes, this surah this ayah in particular
sabbih : سَبِّحِ : tasbeeh/ sabh :
tasbeeh: declaration or to remember Allah with a certain profound remembrance that Allah himself has taught.
sibaha/ sabh: To swim (concept of floating)
Allah awj. is beyond any imperfections. So we have declared this perfect level for Allah and we are not to say anything about Him that brings that level down/ we have to retain that protection.
sabbih: declare the perfection and retain that declaration
bi : means with, bi is missing, to acknowledge the perfection of your Lord/ name of Allah; in every name of Allah you have to be conscious of it
Rabb: He is Rabb and we are Abd.
Rabb includes one who has complete authority over you, the one who gives you gifts, the one who owns you, the one who masters over you (master-slave relationship)
الْأَعْلَى : Al-A'laa : heighy, grandeur: most High/ the one who is absolutely supreme
“Declare the greatness (not just the perfection) of your Supreme Lord”
Tanzeeh : cleanse the name of Lord, concept you have of your lord, have clean thought/ pure thought about your Lord
Any attribute of Allah has no beginning no end. It has no limits/ infinite. It is his own. (Eg. He sees, He knows)
= > attitude: fearful, acknowledging his grandeur, in a respectful fashion
= > Allah should be remembered by names he himself taught us
= > origin from which that zikar in sujood comes, this surah this ayah in particular

2.
الَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ
“The
one who created, (limitless creation, anything)
then He perfected, fashioned, moulded”
sawwa / taswiya : فَسَوَّىٰ : to balance and even out. He balanced, perfected, intricately designed

3.
وَالَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ
“And precisely calculated, then he guided”
qaddara: قَدَّرَ : calculate something, plan something.
planning, calculating, executing every last minute detail.
= > he calculated (almost everything) , planned everything of that creation , its nature, implication, it ceasing to exist, ....
Allah has made a precise calculation for every single thing
human being
messenger of Allah.s
fahada: فَهَدَىٰ: guidance (hidayah kauniyaa wa hidaya sharqiya : guidance of creation/existence and guidance of performing the function whatever they were created for)
“And precisely calculated, then he guided”
qaddara: قَدَّرَ : calculate something, plan something.
planning, calculating, executing every last minute detail.
= > he calculated (almost everything) , planned everything of that creation , its nature, implication, it ceasing to exist, ....
Allah has made a precise calculation for every single thing
human being

4.
وَالَّذِي أَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعَىٰ
“The
one who draws out/ extract/ pull out pasture to graze to animals to feed. “
= > Example of creative process
ra’a : shepherd taking care of animals to pasture
mar’a : الْمَرْعَىٰ : place where animals will graze on it; pastures perfect for grazing
= > Example of creative process

5. فَجَعَلَهُ غُثَاءً أَحْوَىٰ
“Then
He made it (that pasture/grazing field) into some parts of greenery that are
clustered together”
gutha : غُثَاءً : guthyan : to vomit (rubbish or filth togethor)
something that is put together, compiled together
ahwa: أَحْوَىٰ : hawahu: to bring two things together, of something to become black and red at the same time. Eg. Fruit really mature or gone bad
= > talking about vegetation and being reduced into rubbish
= > plants in their early phases and mature phases

6. سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنْسَىٰ
“ Soon, we will make you read/ recite
then you will not forget”
= > don’t worry about memorizing ( Allah saying to Prophet.s )
= > Allah has taken the responsibility

7. إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ
يَعْلَمُ الْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ
“
except for whatever Allah wills.
Certainly it is He who knows the obvious,the seen the visible (Al jahra الْجَهْرَ )
and that which is hidden.”
= > mashiya: شَاءَ: concrete decision
= > some ayah revealed and later replaced with better
= > Alah made his Messenger.s sometimes forget Quran in salah. He was human being

Yaqfa: يَخْفَىٰ : Qafiya: to hide something so well that you don’t even know it exists.

8.
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ
“ And we will make easy for you to get eventually to the ultimate ease” wa nuyassiru laka: We will make easy FOR you
wa nuyassiru ka: Allah has brought himself closer to His messenger.s (expression of love)
= > He will make the path easy to that which is easy. ( struggle of messenger.s will be made easy, task of the Quran, dawah, shariah, laws, .. )
= > I was sent with the legacy of Ibrahim.a, shariah, regulation, commandment, that is very easy– Hadith recorded in Bukhari.
= > yusra is referring to path of memorization of revelation, shariah becomes easy
9.
فَذَكِّرْ إِنْ نَفَعَتِ الذِّكْرَىٰ
“Therefore, then ( after your concerns have been removed, quran will be given to you- you will not forget. distractions have been
taken away, )
Remind! (continuously engage the in act of reminding)
If reminder served to have benefit”
= > for sure remind, because certainly there is benefit in it
= > maybe /perhaps reminder will have benefit
zakara: remember and make mention of it
zikra: الذِّكْرَىٰ : powerful reminder

10. سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَنْ يَخْشَىٰ
“Soon,
the one who fears will make an effort to remember”
man: مَنْ: anyone/ anybody
qashiya: يَخْشَىٰ: to fear something greater than yourself/ that has power to overcome you
= > remember what? Ayat of Quran- word of Allah

11.
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا الْأَشْقَى
“
and who will make an effort to run away and to avoid at all costs the
remembrance”
ashqa/ shaqiya: الْأَشْقَى: most unfortunate/ does not have any good (good advice/ good counsel) wasting his life away

Tajannub:
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا: distanced yourself
from something, to keep far away
12. الَّذِي يَصْلَى النَّارَ الْكُبْرَىٰ
“
The one who will enter/ cast himself/ throw himself into the great fire”
13.ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ
“
Therefore, he will not die in it, nor wil he live in it”

14. قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكَّىٰ

“
No doubt about it, Already,
Someone has already attained success, whoever engages in the act of trying to cleanse themselves within.”
aflah: fallah ; أَفْلَحَ : fruit of his labor : success after lot of work
qad: قَدْ : No doubt about it, Already
man : مَنْ: whoever / anybody
= > bottom line of the surah : look inside yourself
tazkiya/ zakat: تَزَكَّىٰ : purification, He tried to cleanse himself within
Someone has already attained success, whoever engages in the act of trying to cleanse themselves within.”

= > bottom line of the surah : look inside yourself

15. وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّىٰ
What
did he do to purify himself?
“He mentioned the name of His Lord
Then, as a result, he made salah, he prayed”

16. بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
what keeps humanity from finding this right priority of success, what are they running after?
“Rather, on the contrary, all of you given preference / preferred worldly life”
tu’siroona: تُؤْثِرُونَ : Asara : compare two things and decide one is more valuable to you than the other and you give more time and preference.

Dunya
: الدُّنْيَا : closer/ inferior
17. وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ
“And
hereafter is better and more lasting”
Small house, not furnished, not good neighbourhood, forever OR

what would you pick?

18. إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي الصُّحُفِ الْأُولَىٰ
“
No doubt it is this, that has truly been in earlier scriptures”
what has been in earlier scriptures?
that next life is more lasting than this one,
declare the greatness and acknowledge the perfection of name of your lord the most high

19. صُحُفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ
“
scriptures of Ibrahim and Moosa”
= > two primary audience
