Surah Al-Lahab
Tafseer of Surah 111 - Lahab - Nouman Ali Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
-- > Dedicated to the historical accounts of one particular enemy of Islam/kuffar : Abu Lahab and his wife
-- > one of the most famous/ wealthy people/ treasurer/politically powerful/ young guy/ good looking
لَهَبٍ – flame that flickers and gives off light, red in texture; Abu Lahab/ Abdul Uzzah; reddish complexion; powerful lineage;
-- > His wife- Urwa ; very famous; celebrity; Umm Jameel;
this couple- powerful, status, family nobility and good looks;
-- > 2 of his sons married to 2 daughters of messenger.s
-- > When messenger.s loses one of his son (Qassim.r) – Abu Lahab celebrates “Batara Muhammad”
-- > When messenger.s invited leaders of Quraish, Abu Lahab ”Tabbat! Lihaza deen- May this religion be cursed”
-- > When messenger.s called people on one morning for real emergency(day of judgement) Abu Lahab “Tabbat! Laka- May you be cursed! Did you call us for this?”
ma’zallah
1. تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
-- > Dedicated to the historical accounts of one particular enemy of Islam/kuffar : Abu Lahab and his wife

ma’zallah
1. تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ
“(May) both hands of Abu Lahab be destroyed and he was
infact destroyed”
تَبَّتْ : (past-guaranteed, refer to a dua) (feminine- both hands) both hands of Abu Lahab were destroyed, or broke apart slowly or collapsed, falls apart little by little, progressively worse,
to die violently, to go bad, sour and smelly, to go to waste, to be completely void and devoid and emptied out from any good whatsoever
يَدَا : he and every thing he does in life ( will end him In destruction) ; his deen and his duniya; offence and defence
-- > he tried to destroy the mission of the messenger.s and he himself is destroyed
-- > he grabbed a rock to hit the messenger.s
أَبِي لَهَبٍ : Abu Lahab/ Abdul Uzzah- slave of false god ( لَهَبٍ – beautiful red flame) good looks, hot temper; people of fire that is also flickering red
وَتَبَّ : and he was infact destroyed
-- > Abu Lahab was scared to fight, doesn’t go to Badr,
-- > serious disease: swellings all over body, contagious, dying in pain slowly, skin popping and pus coming out, people are afraid to touch his corpse, his sons hired abysinnians ,they dug a ditch, and pushed with tall logs of wood to throw him into the ditch.

2. مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ
“His maal, his assets, his wealth and whatever he earned, his children did not benefit him at all”
مَا : used for past, guaranteed
مَالُهُ : what he already had
كَسَبَ : what he worked for and acquired
-- > Abu Lahab took pride in two things – his wealth and his goods
3. سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ
“Very soon, he will be cast into a flame which possesses / has the quality of red flame and flicker in it”
سَ : immediate future.
سَيَصْلَىٰ : he will be cast, he will be come in contact with, he will be chucked into
4. وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ
"And his wife, his wife will be the continuous carrier of dry wood that is used to make fire"
Umm Jameel/ Urwa- lineage of Umaiya, sister of Abu Sufiyan
-- > she used to grab her necklace whenever she saw the messenger.s, “I will swear by the false god, for sure spend this necklace to complete my animosity against the rasul of Allah.s”
امْرَأَتُهُ : wife, when any fundamental purpose of marriage is missing
Fundamental purposes of marriage: harmony and children
and his wife, the carrier of crackling fire wood,
-- > these two coming together did not bring harmony in the society
-- > He will be thrown into a fire that is made of flames and so will his wife (Ayah 3 and 4)
حَمَّالَةَ : the one who keeps on carrying (fatha/nasab form): condemnation, curse, anger;
a slave woman that carry firewood
الْحَطَبِ : dry wood that is used to make fire (delivered by slave woman);
حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ : facilitating the fuel for her own fire; spread rumor and causing fire
5. فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ
“In her neck will be a rope of palm-fiber”
terrible woman, terrible husband
