Tafseer of Surah 84 - Inshiqaq - Nouman Ali Khan

Theme of inevitability, expectation from us to draw the conclusion

=============== EVENTS OF LAST DAY===================

1. إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ

“ When the sky is completey cracked open / torn off completely”
something that doesn’t associate with huge things tear off or ripping open
it its irreversible.

2. وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

“The sky listened attentively to the commandment of its Lord, (to crack open)
and it is only rightful that it should do so , what other choice does it have ”
Azinat = to listen carefully; to obey the one your listening
huqqat = the only thing it can do, the only thing becoming of it, is that it obey the commandment of its Lord

3. وَإِذَا الْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ

“When the earth is stretched”

 4. وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ

“The earth is going to do ilqa- spit / throw things out
whatever is in it , the dead of the earth
and it empties out / unleash what is inside of it/ let go”

Ilqa = to cast something/ to throw something in front of everyone
qalla- to empty out entirely/ like a mother giving birth

5. وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

“even the earth it listened intently and it complied with the commandments of its Lord, it was as though it was waiting for this moment. This was its destiny”
like you are waiting for someone to give you instructions and you cant wait to follow those instructions. You are in desire to do so even more than the master

====================== CURRENT JOURNEY OF HUMAN BEING ==========

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنْسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَاقِيهِ .6   

That will be the Day of your accountability, O mankind! Surely you must strive towards your Rabb, a hard striving, then you shall meet Him.

7.  فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ

“Then as for the one who has been given his Book in his right hand,”
has been given – past tense – certainty
which book? The record of the righteous
right hand is expression of giving honor, sealing the deal; shakes hand on it

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا  .8

“He will be audited / have a thorough accounting done on every last thing / dealt with an accounting that is easy”
yaseer: easy, comfortable, light weight
Allahumma hasibni hisaban yaseera – According to hadith easy reckoning is like Allah will look into your sins and he will overlook it.
May Allah make us one from them

9. وَيَنْقَلِبُ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا

“And he turns to his family (to those who believed with him) delighted”
suroor: kind of joy you feel deep inside your heart and it hasn’t even come out on the face (inner joy, lasting joy that’s deep inside)
ahlihu: relatives/ group of believers / those who believe with you
May Allah make all our blood relatives, all of our extended family, the entire ummah into those who that we return to on the day of resurrection

10. وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ

“And as for the one who has been given his book behind his back”
yamen – right / shimaal – left
criminals have left hand tied at their back

11. فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُو ثُبُورًا

“Then soon he will be crying thuboor/death – kill me now!”

Yad’u: crying to someone specific.

12. وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا

“And they will cast themselves into sa’eera/ blazing hell fire”

sa’eera: flame that is enraged

thrown into hellfire, they will throw themselves into hellfire, their bodies will give up on them

13.  إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا

“No doubt he, he used to be full of joy with his family”

Never thinking deeply of what he does

14. إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ يَحُورَ

 “It is He who was certainly convinced/ had assumed all along that he will not be brought back”

yahoor: to stroll around somewhere and come back where you started.

=> he never felt bad about what he was doing/ and he was convinced it will never come back to haunt him

15. بَلَىٰ إِنَّ رَبَّهُ كَانَ بِهِ بَصِيرًا

 “Rather, there is no doubt, Your Lord used to be in full view of him(inside out)”

=======CALLING OF HUMAN BEING TO REFLECT UPON SIGNS OF NATURE =======

16. فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ

 “Then as a result,

No! forget about whatever you are thinking. Leave these false assumption aside

I swear by the redness of the evening”

shafaq: (maghrib time)

17.  وَاللَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ

“By the night and what covers inside it”

18. وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا اتَّسَقَ

“By the moon when it reaches fullness/ comes togethor”

(clock is ticking, time is passing by)

19. لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنْ طَبَقٍ

 “All of you are going to ride on one stage or the other”

stages of life : (journey of human life)

belly of mother -- > come out -- > be able to crawl -- > walk -- > independent -- > be powerful than parents -- > cant walk

final envitability-- > where will you end? Allah

Tabaq: stages

20. فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

 “Then what is wrong with them / they don’t believe / have iman”

21.  وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩

and when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate?

“When the Quran is read on to them, they don’t do sajdah”
they hold themselves back
they veil themselves

========================= WARNING =====================

22. بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُكَذِّبُونَ

Nay! The unbelievers will deny;

“Rather, those who disbelieve they are lying viciously against the truth”

(Allah, messenger, DOJ, etc)

23. وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ

“And Allah knows best whatever they bag (they put in the bag)”

Their deeds are like things that are gathered

Allah knows best what they bagged/ gather for themselves

24. فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

 “Congratulate them of painful punishment”

--  warning for disbelievers

25. فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

 “With the exception of those who believed and did good/righteous deeds

It is only for them, they have a reward, not to be discontinued”

gair mamnoon: That which will not be cut, that which will not be separated,

this favor will not be imposed.

it is on them purely from Allah.
