Surah Al-Ma'un
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Tafseer of Surah 107 - Ma'un - Nouman Ali Khan
-- > Makki Surah- more powerful opinion because it’s a commenting on Quraish
-- > Madani Surah – legitimate opinion because second half talking about hypocrites (problem of Madinah)
1. أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
Tafseer of Surah 107 - Ma'un - Nouman Ali Khan

-- > Madani Surah – legitimate opinion because second half talking about hypocrites (problem of Madinah)
1. أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
“(O! Messenger) Did you see the one who lies against the
religion”
specific targeted warning (to Quraish)
الَّذِي : the one – specifically (Waleed ibn Mugheera, Aqnas ibn shurai, Abu Jahal, Abu Lahab) or anyone
يُكَذِّبُ : Takzeeb; lie against someone; you know its true and you are lying against it anyway; he himself is a liar; continuity
دِّينِ : religion-Islam;
to give a loan and you expect it back; concept of being paid back in full (next life)
-- > the denial of resurrection
specific targeted warning (to Quraish)

2. فَذَٰلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ
الْيَتِيمَ
“then he pushes the orphan around”
فَ : the proof that someone does not believe in the after life is that he pushes the orphan around; the other crime against humanity
الْيَتِيمَ : someone who does not have social support; someone whose lost his parents in childhood age
يَدُعُّ : to push someone so far away with the expectation they cant push you back; intimidate someone; bullying someone; kick them out;
to push someone away from his own rights;
he only calls him to make use of him or make fun of him
ذَٰلِكَ : Allah has distance this person from himself and from the messenger.s ; belittle them
-- > they will be pushed(daa’a) into the hellfire
3. وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ
طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
“he doesn’t even encourage/ enjoin the feeding of the poor”
يَحُضُّ : to encourage people to move forward in doing good
الْمِسْكِينِ : singular; the one- their immediate behaviour; helplessness
طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ : food of the orphan; the right of the orphan, it belongs to him
4. فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ
“Then the worst kind of destruction is to fall upon those
who pray”
-- > They are already in destruction
-- > anyone who prays is alerted
-- > violation of right of creation and then violation of rights of creator
لِلْمُصَلِّينَ : (plural)prays regularly; these people pray publicly
5. الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
“Who when they pray, they are heedless and careless and casual and neglectful,”
سَاهُونَ : Sahwa: to forget something out of neglect;
pray sometime and not other times; don’t take care of prerequisites of salah; pray like a bird picking pebbles, bang your head and wait for end time of salah; delay, procrastinate
-- > problem of heart
-- > muslims should organise their daily affairs/ social life around the prayers
-- > they are heedless ‘In Regards’ to prayer ( mercy of Allah not saying Fi salatihim ‘In Salah’ – mind wanders in Salah)
6. الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ
“those who pray, when they pray show off and
show off otherwise also”-- > They are already in destruction
-- > anyone who prays is alerted
-- > violation of right of creation and then violation of rights of creator

5. الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ

6. الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ
يُرَاءُونَ : trying really hard to be seen
7. وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ
“forbid each other and themselves from even giving the tiniest favour to someone else”
-- > crime against people mentioned again; balance
الْمَاعُونَ : something very small and insignificant; zakat, bucket, shovel, pen, napkin, salt, ; cant find smile on someone’s face; harshness of the heart
