Tafseer of Surah 105 - Feel (Part 1) - Nouman Ali Khan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Dua of Ibrahim.a

 -- > Surah Al-Baqara(2:126)

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ مَنْ آمَنَ مِنْهُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۖ قَالَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَأُمَتِّعُهُ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ أَضْطَرُّهُ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ النَّارِ ۖ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ

-- > Surah Ibrahim (14:35)

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا الْبَلَدَ آمِنًا

Surah Baqarah, when he first came to this desert : My master make this (into) a peaceful city
Surah Ibrahim, when he came back, there was a city : My master make this city- peaceful
Provide its citizens all kinds of food(prosperity), only those who believe in Allah and the last day,

Year of the Elephants: (army of elephants- Abraha) the peace and safety of Makkah are not going to last, Allah still fulfilled the prayer of Ibrahim.a –(2:126)- رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا

Surah Quraish- Arabs getting to enjoy the caravans in the summer and the winter (Allah fulfilled second part of dua of Ibrahim.a) –(2:126)- وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ مَنْ آمَنَ مِنْهُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ

Surah Maun- the Quraish are not the unworthy children of Ibrahim.a -(2:126)-
 قَالَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَأُمَتِّعُهُ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ أَضْطَرُّهُ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ النَّارِ

Surah Kauthar – exposing the worthy children of Ibrahim.a –(2:129)-

رَبَّنَا وَابْعَثْ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

legacy of Ibrahim.a – sacrifice!

Surah kafiroon – now you(O Muhammad) are no longer one family, explains why I (Muhammad) am completely disassociating  myself from you people even though I am from your tribe

Surah Nasr – victory of this conflict of war has been given in the hands of Muhammad.s

Surah Lahab -  small victory before the big victory – Allah takes care of one of the vicious enemies of the messenger

Surah Ikhlaas – when people fight conflict for a long time, it is important to remind oneself why we are fighting to begin with ; Summary of Ibrahim.a’s legacy- tauheed

Surah Falaq – protecting the believer from the corruption and evil influence on the outside

Surah Naas – corruption on the inside is guarded against

Surah Al-i'Imran (3:95) :

 فَاتَّبِعُوا مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا 
Make sure you follow the legacy of Ibrahim.a

Surah Al-Fil

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND- Makkah (ancient Bakka)

450-451- Great flood, Yemen lost the great route of trade

Year 400 Qusai ibn Kilab born. He makes a call to the children of Ismael(Arabs) to unify and move to Makkah: Al-mujammi born (The one who gathered)
Year 450 flood
Year 464 Hashim ibn Abd Manaf born (grand child of the great gatherer- Qusai ibn Kilab)
hashim mutallib abdushams and naufau – 4 sons
these four brothers made trade agreements (Ashab ul Ilaf)
Year 457 : Hashim had a son: Abdul mutallib – Abdullah- Muhammad

Year 300 Roman empire accepts Christianity
(later on) Abraha becomes the king of Yemen
built huge shrine, alternative centre, huge monument – to undermine the value of Makkah
He wants his nation to be the centre of trade once again and he sees Quraish now as his formidable competitor.
between 12 to 60 thousand troops are now summoned .
between 9 to 13 elephant. 1 colossal elephant- Mahmood
Abraha gets to the region in month of Muharram
size of the army is greater than the population of makkah

Tafseer of Surah 105 - Feel (Part 2) - Nouman Ali Khan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1. أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ

“Didn’t you see how your Lord dealt with the people of the elephant”

أَلَمْ تَرَ : Did you not see, Did you not reflect upon, Did you not realized, Have you not heard enough times, have you not heard the full depictions of how Allah protected the city as you were growing up,
كَيْفَ  : how can Allah do that, how did your master deal with them
Muhammad.s born atleast 50 days after in the same year ( Am-al-Feel:Year of Elephant)
-- > the entire city had to be evacuated;
-- > (in form of question) - it seems that you forgotten
-- > evoke a memory -do you realize how Allah comes to the help of His house, and you don’t realize that He is your master, He will come to your help also
-- > strong consolation
الْفِيلِ : the elephant – Mahmood name of the colossal elephant;
بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ : people of elephant; elephant like people(like animals)
-- > Abraha didn’t die in Arabia, he made it all the way upto Yemen and by the time he got back, the pebbles that hit them, the سِجِّيلٍ , it caused the disease of skin on him, that was peeling his skin off
فَعَلَ : action, movement, incident; action without intention, without effort
رَبُّكَ : master having slaves; your Master(Muhammad.s)
-- > the elephant were commanded to destroy the house, everytime they pointed the elephant towards the Kaba, he would turn away from it and run away


2.  أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ

“Didn’t he make their plot in waste/ reduce it to nothing?”
يَجْعَلْ : take something that already exists and transform it; transformed the plan
كَيْدَ: plot made in secret to harm someone (economic and political reasons behing religious intentions)
تَضْلِيلٍ : to be lost; one after the other their plans were destroyed; completely put to waste
-- >
فِي : clear for anyone to see

3.  وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ 

“And He sent against them birds (specifically to them) Ababeel, herds upon herds upon herds”
-- > one pebble in its beak and 2 pebbles in each of its claws
these stone/rock/pebbles would land on the head of the person and come out from behind them
أَبَابِيلَ :  many species of birds; they were coming from every directions and they couldn’t see the sky; green birds that came out of the oceans; flocks upon flocks of birds; no singular word/form for Ababeel; that they are dispersed, continuous, unified
عَلَيْهِمْ : upon; that of domination; punishment
طَيْرًا : all kinds of birds;
armies of allah: wind, angels, birds

Tafseer of Surah 106 - Quraish - Nouman Ali Khan

4.  تَرْمِيهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍ مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ

“they continuously pebbled them with stones made of Sijjeel”
رْمِيهِمْ : (present) happened over and over again – pebbles keep on coming; to throw something at distance, the birds were at a tall height; something that is thrown at a specific target;
سِجِّيلٍ : pebbles made of sand baked in the sun; hard enough; kind of rock that penetrates the body;
Sijjeen- record of criminals that is with Allah, held in the depth of hellfire.
-- > the pebbles infected the skin, looked like their skin was burnt
-- > pebbles would enter into the skull, and come out from behind them

5.  فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَأْكُولٍ

“then he made them transformed them like the chewed-up corn”

فَجَعَلَهُمْ : took something and made it something else; (powerful army before)
كَعَصْفٍ : ka: كَ -like; عَصْفٍ : the leaf of the tree that is cut off by wind; straws flying all over
مَأْكُولٍ :  that which eaten; its destiny is to be destroyed
كَعَصْفٍ مَأْكُولٍ : left over that the animal has chewed on and that slipped out of his mouth and fell
-- > the wind blows, the straws come and the animals eat them
-- > the straws that animals chew on
