certain kind of person when they are in business, they like to get little more
than they deserve and when they have to give, they give little less than they
should in services like goods, etc

1. وَيْلٌ
لِلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
“Ultimate / horrible destruction is for those who
get engaed in this kind of tafheem, just scale a little bit.”
giving less / taking more than you should (little bit cheating in business)
Sahih Bukhari Hadith: They did not cheat a little bit except that crops stopped growing or they were ceased by means of drought, natural problems-punishment of Allah.

2. الَّذِينَ إِذَا
اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
–customer--
“These people when they receive weight or measure the product from someone against the people, they try to get full.”
iktaal: to receive the product from someone based on a certain weight.
ala: bullying him/ unfairly getting more than what they deserve.

3. وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ
أَوْ وَزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ.
–seller—
“And when they have to weigh/measure the product for others, they make sure that the other person leaves in loss. “
yuqsiroon: make somebody else lose out. (10%, 2%, 0.1% - any loss)

4. أَلَا يَظُنُّ
أُولَٰئِكَ أَنَّهُمْ مَبْعُوثُونَ
“Have those
people who do this, haven’t they ever fathomed / cross their imagination that
they are going to be raised. ”
ulaika: Allah has distanced himself away from them.
Overtime, they become proud when they don’t get anything.

5. لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
“For an enormous day”
azm: bone ( tough / stiff / intense ); difficult to break – coming in contact with it will cause you great pain.

6. يَوْمَ يَقُومُ
النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“The day on which the people will be standing before
the Rabb of all of the worlds”
al-alameen: all of nations ( lord of criminals / cheaters / customers / clients )

7. كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ
الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ
Indeed not! The record of the wicked is in Sijjeen
(prison register),
“ kalla: No. not at all,
inna: no doubt about it”
(This assumption is not enough to save you)
“The book of the vicious criminals, its kept in sijjeen”
fajr: rips through night
fajir: The one who disobeys Allah in the most vicious way. They are proud of it.

8. وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ
what will explain to you, what the Sijjeen is?
“And do you have any clue what this sijjeeen is ?”

9. كِتَابٌ مَرْقُومٌ
“It is documented / written / presented in
writing.”
markoom: to write something in thick clear writing and to imprint it so it cannot be erased.

10.
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
“Ultimate destruction especially on that day for
those who lie”

الَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ
الدِّينِ
“Those who lied against the day of judgement”

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِ إِلَّا كُلُّ
مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
“And there is no one at all in existence who would
lie against that except mutadin atheem- worst of the worst”
mu’tadin: violate somebodys rights, wrong somebody, cross the limits

A kind of attitude and behaviour that keeps you away from doing good things.

13.
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ
أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
“When our miraculous signs are recited on to him
over and over again, He responds legends of old times”
tilawah: follow someone; it also means to read. ayat are read on to them and message follows.

14.
كَلَّا
ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
“Not at all, rather, we placed a rust or filth on
their heart because of whatever they used to earn.”
Hadith by Abu Hurairah: (Bukhari) A person who does a sin, he gets a spot – danas-blemish on his heart, then if he repents, go back, it gets scrubbed off / washed off / polished. But if he continues, another spot and another and another until the heart becomes black.

15.
كَلَّا
إِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَمَحْجُوبُونَ
“It is these people especially when it comes to
their lord, they are going to be barricaded / blocked off from the view of
their lord”
meaning they wont be able to see their lord on that day. There will be hijab / bsrrier / out of sight.
This ayah is a proof that the believers will infact see their Lord. When Allah’s enemies are barricaded away / blocked off from seeing Him, then He will show his full glory to the believers. (punishment to the kuffar and gift for the believers)

16.
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُو الْجَحِيمِ
“Thereafter, they will be jumping into/casting
themselves into the blazing flames”
17. ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ
بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ
“Then, it
will be said
(speaker is not mentioned, Allah is not talking to them directly)
this is the very thing that you had been lying against all along”

18.
كَلَّا
إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْأَبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ
–BELIEVERS:
Scene changed- Righteous – 6 ayat – People of Jannah--
“Not at all, Indeed the book of the righteous is going to be in the illiyyeen”
illiyyeen: means height (company of the highest, noble, responsible, high angels) . Very high place, noble, honored and dignified in the highest part of Jannah.

(c) book itself is called illiyyeen
The soul of the believers is taken up above all levels of heaven until they reach underneath the Arsh. And they have the record illiyyeen. The rooh/ soul is shown the record there. Eg. Record states that these Shuhada are safe, guarantees their entry to Jannah.

كِتَابٌ مَرْقُومٌ
“The closest to Allah.swt will be witnessed to them
all/ watching over. ”
21. يَشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
They are being witness to the book.
Angels are guarding these records / book of the righteous where all their deeds are written / documented. It is the highest place of Jannah.
The rooh of the mumin is shown this record – is given guarantee to Jannah and he is also included in Al-muqarraboon.

22.
إِنَّ
الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ
They are in ‘nayeem’, all around them is nayeem.
23.
عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ
“They are going to be
on these cushions, focussed on one thing”
Areeka/araika : chair, throne, large couch full of cushions ( you recline on it and relax).

24. تَعْرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِيمِ
“ You will recognize on their faces – nazara “
“Their lit/ their fresh, they are really happy to be there”
Nazara : lighting up of one space you can see the freshness/ happiness/ joy in it. Eg. Vegetables that are ripe and fresh

“These blissful things that they see, that’s what lights their face up”

25. يُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ رَحِيقٍ مَخْتُومٍ
“They will be given to drink beautiful wine
bottles”

Raheeq : The purest possible wine/ drink, crystal clear and it doesn’t get you drunk; great texture and color, it also has a nice smell
maqtoom: sealed off, closed off, original seal meant for you to open it.

26.
خِتَامُهُ
مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ
“Even the seal has this perfume like smell/
inscent”
Then, in that those who compete they should compete this. This is something worth competing. (Believer sees jannah)
Tanaafus: they are running towards something so elegant, so classy, so exotic
All people really wanted it and competing towards it in a spirit of healthy competition.

27.
وَمِزَاجُهُ
مِنْ تَسْنِيمٍ
“ drink is something – the mixture of flavour added
from a very high fountain/ waterfall up there somewhere”
Mizaj: was used when you mixed the drink (to give it a new flavor)
Tasneem : a very high place/ to elevate something
Sanaam: hump of camel

28.
عَيْنًا
يَشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
“The closest to Allah will be sitting next to the
waterfall”
and they are drinking from it. This illustrates that those who are closest to Allah will be in a higher position than even the righteous.

29.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ
“No, doubt,
those who engaged in crime and will see the consequences of them - have been
making fun/ laughing at them”
ijram: illustrates one who does crimes and also sees the consequences of your crime
kanu: used to . As if a memory passes through the mind of people in Jannah; they used to laught at them in the past

30.
وَإِذَا
مَرُّوا بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
“And when they would pass by them, they would make
gestures with eyes” (wink at them, roll eyes)

31.
وَإِذَا انْقَلَبُوا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمُ
انْقَلَبُوا فَكِهِينَ
Now that this done, poking fun at the believers,
“they (these kuffar) return to their families, full of joy”

32.
وَإِذَا
رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَضَالُّونَ
“ And when they saw them, they said these people
are truly confused, so lost.”

وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ
“And they
had not been sent upon them as guardians”
meaning these disbelievers were not sent to watch over the believers ;

34.
فَالْيَوْمَ
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
“Then on
that day, as a result, those who believe will be poking fun / laughing at the
kuffars”

عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ
“They are going to be on these cushions, focussed
on one thing” reclining, relaxing. They are looking at the disbelievers in
hellfire
36.
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا
يَفْعَلُونَ
“Has those who disbelieved paid a good salary for
what they used to do”
“Have they been given what they deserved”
